Easy to make Texas chocolate sheet cake kept moist from the addition of the buttermilk and topped with a delicious fudgy warm chocolate frosting.
Have it ever happened to you to have a recipe on my bucket list for as long as you remember and even though it seems like you see that particular recipe in every magazine, cookbook blog somehow you never find the time to make it?
Texas Chocolate sheet cake has been one of those recipes that I keep postponing making for like forever but I finally got around making it. And not just any kind of Texas chocolate sheet cake recipe, but one that has been passed from generation to generations.

My friend Carrian, the wonderful blogger behind Oh Sweet Basil picked this Texas sheet cake as her family favorite and after making it I understood one a simple, thin cake can make your heart skip a beat.
The cake is made in a big sheet cake (thus the name) and once it’s out of the oven and slightly cooled, a thin layer of rich fudgy warm frosting is spread on top of it.
The cake itself is soft and moist, sweet and chocolate-y.
It’s definitely a crowd pleaser and if you’re looking for a recipe to make at your next get-together or bring to a pot-luck, look no further. This Texas chocolate sheet cake will put a smile on everyone’s face.

Oh yum! I can’t wait to try this. I’ve made Texas sheet cake once or twice, and always loved how it turned out (brought it to a party where one guest at five — yes, FIVE — slices!!). But I’ve been using a recipe I found in a big-name cookbook. I’d much rather try a recipe that’s been passed down through generations.
I never try this on my life.. (I live on southamerica) but i can tell by the looks that it looks like a brownie but have a softer texture.. i must try this soon
These look divine… loved the texture and the warm frosting – YUM!!
This is the best Texas sheet cake I’ve ever seen!
This version of Texas sheet cake looks absolutely delicious! I’ve never made it, but that needs to change fast!
Love this decadent, chocolaty Texas-sized treat from Carrian! I wanna dive right in!
This looks so moist and delicious! Bring on the Texas sheet cake!
I love this cake, it looks like the perfect way to satisfy my chocolate cravings!
The perfect cake to satisfy any level of chocolate craving…tiny or HUGE! I need a piece right now. Mmmm!
Question? Why margarine instead of butter? Does it make a difference, other than butter tasting better than margarine?
Hi Dawn,
You can totally use butter, and although it does turn out a little different, it’s not that big of a deal. It’s just what my grandmother used because it was cheaper during those hard times so I keep the recipe the same even though I usually prefer butter.
I’ve been making Texas sheet cake for close to a hundred years and I never get tired of it, neither does the family. It’s always a treat but my family always asks for “double frosting” 🙂 Your cake looks wonderful Roxana and your photos are spectacular!
thank you for the butter/margarine information. I thought as much but just wanted to be sure. I wanted to tell you I’ve had Jessie’s fudge pie recipe since the 70’s when my kids were little but seeing it again on here reminded me of it.. it’s tucked away in my old trusty recipe file on a chocolate stained index card. Treasures for my grandchildren to have when I’m gone.
I love your blog.
I saw Suzanne of You Made That blog post a Texas sheet cake last year. Since then, I’ve been wanting to make one for a party or get-together. I’m thinking Thanksgiving I will make this! Looks luscious!
I used to make a sheet cake before I started the blog and now you’ve reminded me to bring it back into my life. Look how soft and moist those squares are—yum!
