Frosted chocolate buttermilk sheet cake

September 29, 2013 by Roxana 11 Comments

Light, fluffy and delicate chocolate buttermilk sheet cake topped with a ridiculously simple chocolate frosting and finely chopped nuts.
Chocolate buttermilk sheet cake recipe

It’s been a month since we’ve been talking chocolate desserts. There have been cakes, cookies, and brownies. Some simple, some more complicated. All impossible to resist. But I can’t end this chocolate party without two easy as 1-2-3 chocolate desserts.

This frosted chocolate buttermilk sheet cake is one of them. It takes no more than 5 minutes to make the cake batter. Bake and  wait until it’s cooled.

The frosting. It’s ridiculously simple and it’s as good as a chocolate frosting can be. All you have to do is mix the ingredients until desired consistency and spread it over the baked and cooled cake.

The original recipe calls for sour milk but I’ve used buttermilk which made a big difference in the texture of the cake. It is moist and tender with a nice crumb, just like a cupcake.

I’ve baked the cake in a 13X9 pan, not quite a sheet cake and it was a little thicker than an original sheet cake and make the frosting a little fluffier whipping it up a little longer.

Either way, even if you bake it in a sheet pan or a 13X9 pan like me, I highly advise you to make this cake for your next get-together, potluck or just because you’re craving something sweet, rich and chocolate-y.

Chocolate cakes made with buttermilk have such a beautiful moist crumb...yum! LOVE that this cake is baked in a 9x13-inch baking pan vs. a sheet pan for a thicker cake and satisfying bite. And, with that whipped chocolate frosting? Yes, please!
